It is said that to become a writer, you have to be a reader first. Every reading experience adds to your knowledge of reading. Some books, however, bring to you more as a writer than others. I’m taking you all on this journey to be a better writer via handpicked books. Some of these books might open you up on technical aspects, others may take you on a mental journey towards better writing, while some may simply help you to pause and reflect. Here’s my list of six books that a writer should read in their lifetime, preferably as soon as possible. When you buy them, it will be a good idea to check Shopper.com and save some money when you shop.

  • On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

It is considered to be one of the holy grails of the writing world. It is, in fact, a memoir. The fact that it happens to be one of the masterclasses on the subject of writing is a tribute to the genius of Stephen King. The book is essentially a journey of Stephen King as a writer, through thick and thin. It talks about writing, inspires you to write well, and also makes you more aware of the reality of being a writer. The book was welcomed by ‘Long Live the King’ headline of Entertainment Weekly.

A Holy Grail for Writers

  • Chicken Soup for the Writer’s Soul

Chicken Soup is one of the widely recognized and loved series, created and curated to power up our inspiration. Inspiration is one of the most important ingredients for success. Chicken Soup for the Writer’s Soul is a collection of stories of writers in different phases of their career or process, and how they got through and conquered the demon. The series is about completing the challenge of writing, while also being able to enjoy the same. The stories involve people like you and me, people who have been through the same problems but have found ways to overcome. The book will give you optimism. You can also check out other books from chicken soup curated for writers like:

  • Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

Bird by bird is an expression for one by one or one problem at a time. It was advice from the author’s father to her brother, who was ten at the time and writing a report on birds. Her brother was worried about the humongous task that was due in three months’ time. Father barely simplified the process. That’s how the book works, by taking problems bird by bird, and tackling them. Be it short assignments, shitty drafts, characters, plot, dialogues; everything is dealt with properly. Notes on life are an important aspect that is touched upon too, in the same vein.

Some great instructions for writers
  • The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield

The War of Art is a wholesome book for creative people in different levels of despair over their struggles for their art. The book puts several ideas across, and breaks several myths around the art and its creation. The book is dense. It can be hard-read. It must not be taken all at once. However, the ideas presented in the book are deep and worth keeping safe. Once you imbibe the book within you, you will start feeling the effects of the same. It is not a book that will teach you writing. It is, rather, a book that provides you with an idea on pursuing your art, and finding inspiration.

On Art and Creativity, and the Challenges
  • Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss

One of the run-away hits when it was released, the title of the book is also a joke. The book is purely about punctuation. Punctuation is an important part of writing. It is an essential part if you plan to do any serious writing. Ironically, most people do not know or understand punctuation. It works in mysterious ways. What will editors do if you take care of all the grammar and punctuation, after all, isn’t it? That’s a silly excuse, and also, this is an age of self-publishing and cost-cutting. And, social media of course. How long will you carry an editor, when you can simply learn grammar and punctuation, and let editor enhance your story rather than be fixated on fixing the apostrophe and the exclamations. The book is insanely humorous, too.

A Humorous Book on Punctuation
  • How To Make A Living With Your Writing: Books, Blogging and More by Joanna Penn

The joke, often, with the writers is the question ‘what do you do for a living?’. If the book is to be believed and followed, the answer can be ‘writing’. The book talks about learning through writing and blogging. Not a get-rich scheme, this book is simply a testament to the fact that many authors manage to earn a living through writing. The idea is always to treat writing as a business, and put yourself out there in the same manner. Writers are often guilty of putting themselves on a higher pedestal, and talking about why writing isn’t rewarding because people are not smart enough. This book should help you get started with setting your financial journey on the right path, while also allowing you to focus on your art of writing.

Earn a living as a writer, don’t keep it as a hobby!

Writing might be a mysterious business. However, it isn’t, if you follow the simple rules. As Stephen King would put it, the two rules of writing are: ‘read a lot, and write a lot’. I have put forth a list of books that can be extremely helpful in various problems that a writer may face. Inspiration, grammar, writing methods and processes, and making a living with writing – several subjects are covered in these six books. These books, I believe, will be essential for your journey as a writer, and hence must be read by each and every budding writer out there. Or, you could pick the book that solves your particular problem.

Are you a writer? Put your blog links below, and I’ll happily check out your blog and books (although there might be a reading queue).

Quotes Liked by Readers:

~ “Neither knew where they would go from here except that it would not be anything related to growing apart this time.”

~ “She hugged her tight and announced her name – “Mukti“.”

Excerpt:

She finally settled herself in bed, and out of habit, picked up her current read. Few pages in, she remembered about the next day’s schedule and proceeded to check that on her phone, another habit that she believed helped her to be prepared at all times. And then she stopped! How she wished she had not checked it. At least, not today. The date glared back, mocking her, bringing up unwanted emotions. “Seven,” she whispered. A single tear rolled down her cheeks before she knew it. It would be seven years tomorrow since that fateful day. As always, this anniversary brought with it a full range of emotions: guilt, sadness, and frustration at herself. She had even blamed Kshitij for whatever had happened that day, only to realize it wasn’t really his fault. Even after so many years, the memories of that day have remained imprinted upon her mind.

A bit of a background: I had often heard about some great content being delivered in Malayalam Cinema. To be honest, I was intrigued ever since Dulquer Salman entered the Hindi film industry with Karwaan (which I saw for Irrfan primarily but loved Dulquer in it), and I happened to see some of the trailers of his earlier film. As a sidenote, Karwaan is a personal recommendation.

Then, a few days back, I happened to watch an interview on Film Companion with the actor Roshan Mathew (who made his debut in Bollywood with Choked), actor-producer Fahadh Fazil, and director-writer-and-many-other-roles Mahesh Narayanan. What attracted me to the interview? The line that ‘you need only 10-15 people to make a film, provided you have a right people’. The fact that the release was at the midnight helped me further.

Check out our review of Choked, written by Aman Arora.

I loved the interview. I loved the people. What they told made so much sense that I felt that the language barrier notwithstanding, these are the people who work in the way I would like to work. Then I turned to the movie exactly at midnight. Somehow it intrigued me. Also, I wanted to disagree with ‘Malayalam cinema is way better than Hindi cinema’. I don’t have a reason to do so now.

Coming to the film, this is a film shot entirely on iPhone. This is the film that has been shot with plenty of constraints in order – shot during Covid19 induced restrictions and lock-down among other things. This is the film that had to have a perfect script, else everything could have fallen apart. This is the film that relied so much more on performances because you can always see them zoomed-in. The film is almost entirely on video-calling. So, what really happened? The near-perfect script with even better performances.

The film, as per IMDB, is described in the following summary:

Jimmy meets Anu on an online dating website and decides to marry her. Jimmy’s mother entrusts his cousin Kevin to get details about Anu. Now its Kevin’s turn to search for his cousin’s fiancée who vanished without a trace, only to discover dark, shocking truths about her.

Now that you have their attention, rest assured, you won’t lose it till the film is over. The film is shot in a hyper-realistic manner, everything appears to be happening at the moment. Everything is, also, breezy. The suspense keeps building up, and slows down only in the last 5 minutes. The film is incredibly tight. The editing is superb (again by director himself). The film is designed somewhat too realistically. This film can scare people.

Fahadh Fazil is a supposed legend in Malayalam cinema – all built upon his performances. Let’s drop the world ‘supposed’. Let’s just call him a legend in Indian cinema. In a fair world, we would.

fahadh fazil

Roshan Mathew is a delight. Having seen him again in Choked, I can really vouch for him. Darshana Rajendran’s performance, though, is pure cinema. She can make you feel anything she wants – with or without dialogues. The rest of the cast is apt. The ideal films usually have all their casts spot-on. Like a low-budget content-driven Hindi film, this film has a perfect cast with some heart-touching performances.

So, what else? More Malayalam cinema. I plan to be your window to the regional cinema, one by one. I would be a more authentic voice than the ones whose native language the film is in, because I would be watching the film the same way you will, subtitles and no inkling of what-the-f-is-going-on when you miss reading subtitles for a minute.

Read the Excerpt

Excerpt 1:

Sukirti lingered on at the gate a bit longer than necessary. She wondered if her mother had noticed how she was lost in her thoughts when she walked in. She certainly didn’t comment on it. Sukirti went directly to her room. She had never experienced the kind of rush she felt with Vaibhav. When she was pressed to him on impact because of the speed breaker, it was as if her whole body had exploded. She was tingling wherever her body had touched his. She knew this was different than anything she had ever known. She remembered her elder cousin Garima telling her about her boyfriend and how he made her feel. At that time, she had not thought it was possible to feel like you were on fire. That day, she understood.

Was she developing a crush on Vaibhav?

Excerpt 2:

That smile was his undoing. He had fallen madly in love with Sukirti, the girl with a golden heart and the prettiest eyes. He couldn’t dare to lose her friendship, so he never complicated their relationship. It was difficult to believe that it had only been three months since they knew each other. They were inseparable. Their classmates and friends teased them, and boys even made kissing sounds when they were alone with Vaibhav, but he maintained that they were friends. In fact, Sukirti had never given him any reason to believe otherwise. She was a perfect friend and never lead him on to believe that she felt more for him. Once, when they were talking on the phone and somehow the conversation had moved to friendship and love, he had come very close to confessing his feelings to her, but his mother’s knock on the door had saved him just in time.

“Of course, we will talk on the phone Sue, but practicing like this is much better na,” he said, hiding his disappointment at her not being as affected as he was. All he could do was hope that she would come for the farewell. He had something special planned for her.

Excerpt 3:

“Sir, please proceed towards Gate No. 74. There was a last-minute change in the boarding gate for your flight,” the ground staff said politely. What the fuck! He had postponed his boarding to the last minute and now the gate had been changed. His heart was beating fast as he pushed his trolley bag and walked quickly towards Gate No. 74. As he reached the gate, he realized there was a lot of rush because of the last-minute gate change. Though the first-class passengers were given priority over others, he still managed to bump into a hassled girl with a bang. Both liquor bottles went flying and the trolley bag hit him in his shin, hard.

He was waiting for the crashing sound of the bottles and when that didn’t happen, he looked up to find dark kohled eyes, smoothened shoulder length hair, oxidized jewelry and red lips glaring at the mess he had caused.

SUE!!!

His heart stopped beating.

“What the hell? Where do you think you are going?” Sue looked up at him. Her eyes expanded in amazement when it registered that she had bumped into Vaibhav. Reining in her galloping heart at the right moment, Sue enquired if he was alright.

“Yes, I am perfectly fine, but my duty-free loot might be a different story.” He picked up the packet and sighed with relief when he found them to be okay. He signaled a thumbs up to Sue.

“What are you doing here? Are you on this flight?” Sue was shaken. Not visibly so, but she was. She had gotten very good at hiding her emotions and it would take a professional to know that she was experiencing euphoria and dread at the same time on meeting Vaibhav.

Before he could reply, a ground crew member came forward and rushed him to the counter and he could only wave at Sue while she was also being rushed at the Economy Counter.

The moment the seat belt sign switched off, the stewardess came to escort the girl sitting next to Sue. Vaibhav popped into the seat next to her immediately after.

There are books that break your heart, there are books that uplift your spirits, there are books that take you on a path – but the common factor is the structure of the books. The structure is always well-defined, with its regular ups and downs. Here, we have a diary that has been published – so it imitates real life and not a structured book. It can be a jarring experience, but it leaves its impression.

At the heart of the book is the story of coming of age of a 12 year old, forced to live in hiding in Holland due to Hitler’s attack on Jews. At the heart, the story is just that – of a girl, going through her puberty, experiencing emotional and physical changes – all expressed in experiences. At the heart, it is a story of a any child who feels misunderstood. At the heart, it is also the story of the first love, and the first kiss, and the excitement of the first touch and holding hands, and sneaking behind the back of the parents.

Yet, that isn’t all the diary is about. The diary, to me, spoke of the term we know as collateral damage. When leaders depend on military, and when the nationality quotient is so high, we have collateral damage. As long as it is not us, we are okay, for the betterment of the nation. History is filled with countless examples of crimes of nationality. Often, the worst sufferers are the own people – the collateral damage. This is a story of collateral damage. How a child is locked up in hiding, with not even access to fresh air, forget anything else.

Der Mann hat einen grossen Geist
Und ist so klein von Taten!

Ironically, the above words are used by Anne for the people around her. But these stayed with me. When translated, they mean:

“The spirit of the man is great,
How puny are his deeds.”

I had the misfortune of not knowing what eventually happened to Anne Frank when I started reading. The book actually gave me a hope. Then, in the middle, I happened to check and was heart-broken. It became more and more stressful reading, because within all the words lay a hope of a future outside the hiding, plans for the future, the doubts of whether to go to school again or not, the dream of being a writer – all these lay in the diary.

She became a writer, posthumously. Only her Pim (father) remained alive from her family. She, though, became one of the most successful writers for the diary. There cannot be a literary review of the diary. As mentioned above, it doesn’t follow a structure. Practically nothing happens for over two years. You can almost feel the claustrophobia. We struggle to keep ourselves in with a pandemic going on, and this was something else. Also, it was in the midst of a constant fear of being found out – and for a fate worse than death.

i would end by thanking Anne Frank for such a personal account into her life, and thereby allowing me to feel a little more human, being enriched by her journey. I wish everyone reads this, and gets as uncomfortable as I did.

All it took was one look. And they were in love…

Princess Hemangini is mesmerised by Prince Devendra when she falls into his arms while rushing across the royal gardens.

The Prince of Indrapuri is amazed that the Princess of Mahendrapuri is even more beautiful and graceful than what the visiting bards sang in praise of her.

Their mutual attraction blooms into love and they decide to get married. Tying the knot is easy, but consummating the marriage is another matter altogether.

As their love and passion draw them towards each other, Devendra’s mother, Queen Kanchana Devi, keeps throwing obstacles in the path of the lovers; sometimes in the name of rituals and sometimes inflicting doubts in their minds; doing her best to keep them apart.

As the frustrated bride and groom tolerate the intervening time with impatience, something happens to shake up Hemangini; something that makes her refuse to let her husband touch her.

What will the proud prince have to do to make his princess fall into his arms once again?

Read this historical romance from India to find out if the passionate princess finds happiness with her prince or not.

It would be great if you can add this book to your TBR

Sundari Venkatraman is an Indie Author who has 40+ books to her credit. These books have consistently featured in the Top 100 Bestseller Lists on Amazon India, Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada and Amazon Australia in both romance as well as Asian Drama categories. Her latest hot romances have all been on #1 Bestseller slot in Amazon India for over a month.

The Passionate Princess, Book #1 of The Princess Series, is the author’s first attempt at penning a historical romance.

Even as a child, Sundari absolutely loved the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome and she grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, Phantom comics and Mandrake comics. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy ending after the protagonists surmounted all unexpected obstacles.

Once she entered her teens, Sundari switched her loyalties from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to local heroes and heroines. And of course, the joy of vanquishing the ubiquitous evil villains! Her imagination soared and she happily ensconced herself in a rosy romantic cocoon for many years.

Then came the writing—a true bolt from the blue! And Sundari Venkatraman has never looked back.
